I'm referring to Atlas Shrugged, the novel by Ayn Rand. One of the heroes of the story is Dagny Taggart of a Taggart Transcontinental Railroad. While the undertones of the book are really about government intervention in the marketplace and the fall of the economy, the main storyline revolves around the stuff at Taggart Transcontinental and a new metal being used to make the tracks. Wikipedia has a little bit on her character, but she's basically the one who has the balls to run the train line because her older brother sucks at it. [link]
If you're interested in reading it let me know, it's not a light read but I have a box full of copies in my closet.
